GEISAI 10 REPORT
Geisai is one of those wonderful huge art shows like DESIGN FESTA. The main difference between the two is, DESIGN FESTA is more full of hobby people doing cute and funny things, who eventually want to get their character on a t-shirt or perhaps a small limited-edition figurine. GEISAI is more oriented towards less-cute, more techincally proficient people who are probably working as illustrators already, but they want to get into the fine arts business. DF has a lot of stuffed animals and adobe illustrator art, but GEISAI is almost entirely paintings. But it's still not pretentious at all, and the competition is kept friendly, with a minimum of stabbings and defacement. Compared to last year's GEISAI, there is a big increase in people doing psychotically small detailed black and white pen and ink stuff, really obsessive and wonderful. Also it is partly run by Takashi Murakami, the pop-art star, who has an autograph booth and who also judges some kind of art-talent show at the end.
Unfortunately my stupid camera ran out of stupid batteries halfway through the stupid show so I can't show you all the stupid wonderful art, particularly the comedian HARD GAY, who was debuting a life-size statue of himself bent over smiling with his rectum distended to over a foot, surrounded by a corona of rainbow-colored veins. No pictures of that.

Name - ujino and the rotators
Description - these guys had turntalbes, with little pegs in them, which
acted like a player piano. when the peg (above) goes under the wooden
stick, it trips a circut which activates one of his home-made instruments
-- which are all various household appliances fitted with special microphones
that magnify their whizzing and boinking. Those signals are then put through
a variety of delays and weird effects. The whole thing is just wonderful,
repeating rhythms. The gentleman then uses a home-made steel crossfader
to turn the loops on and off and mix them together to make a huge multilayered
dance tune where every sound is utterly unlike anything you have ever
heard before.

hand-engraves a copper plate for each color-layer and then puts ink on
it and just MOOSHES it onto the paper with 100KG weights.
