![]() RIRI INOUE interview
RIRI-san is a wonderful photographer. She worked really hard with me editing this interview into shape. I'm grateful! Also, keep in mind, she has like 4 different styles of photos, and this interview only covers one of them!!!
☆Where did you grow up? ☆When did you first
look at art and say to yourself, hey, I can do that too! 工作や、作曲や、 ☆Who was the artistic influence? In high school, I was really interested in
Japanese artists from the
'60s, such as Terayama
Shuuji. In college, I'd already started to study photography,
so I was inspired by such photographers as Ueda Shouji, Sandy Sukogurando,
Yanagi Miwa, Morimura Yasumasa,
and so on. [most of them had elaborately staged photos using lots of props,
almost like a painting made real] I helped start the "Theatrical
Photo Group." After that, I got into Henry
Darger, Mandalas,
and western-style church murals, and Matthew Barney. That is how I arrived
at the huge, panoramic photos you are asking about. Did you enjoy
it? After college, I went to Kyoto University
of Art And Design for five years. I had a great time. ☆If you were the president of the art
school, what changes would you make to improve it? If and when I become an art school president,
here is how I would improve the curriculum; 6☆ Ms. Riri, you are a member of the
"gekishashindan" (theatrical photogroup), yes? That was just the name of my art-team from
college. After we graduated, we broke up. Currently I carry it on by myself. 7☆Are you called that because your
photos look like the stage set from a play? Yes. I direct the arrangement of props and
models like a theatre director. But, that does not mean that there is
a story or plot like a play has. ☆When and how did the idea to do this
kind of picture In my first year of college, I was studying
animation. With that
☆Have you seen Matthew Barney's movies
which often have broadway-musical-show-like scenes? I have such a deep and huge interest in Matthew Barney's artworks. Last year, at the 21st century kanazawa museum, I saw the opening of his new movie DRAWING RESTRAINT 9. this is the movie about the Japanese whaling industry. Of all his works, I think that his cremaster
cycle is one of the best. Especially, cremaster
three, where Aimee Mullins has the 特 ☆Where do you find your models? They're all my friends.
☆This picture, what is the name? "Journeys ~ The Crown Prince Amateruhiko
shoots an arrow at the > what is the original legend about the crown prince Amateruhiko? There are no original legend about crown prince
Amateruhiko. ☆are you using photoshop? No. I didn't use photoshop. ☆What is the theme of "The Crown Princess Amateruhiko shoots an arrow at the rising sun"? It's a parody of Japanese culture. The legend
is some ☆ When you took the picture, how many
models were on hand? How many assistants? The photo shoot took three days. Each day
there were around five models and up to 8 assistants, I think. ☆ what do the props symbolize? The
balloons, musical instruments, bows, arrows, and so forth)
特 例えば、弓と風船は戦争と平和を、天女と携帯電話はハレ(非日常)と ☆ what is improvised when you are doing
a photo shoot? Here is my process. First, it is essential to make an "idea sketch" (incorporating both the theme and the arrangements of people/props to evoke that theme). At that stage, I must ask myself what kind of motif I will use. I take my time to decide. . . I think of many ideas and discard many ideas, one after the other. For this picture, we did it as a team, so everyone sort of brainstormed ideas together. It took a long time, but we wanted to do it very carefully.
☆Why did you do such a huge picture? Because I was influenced by the murals at
churches, and mandalas at temples. Especially how the scale of those kinds
of pictures is overwhelming. I wanted to grapple with the expression of
my own cosmology and also, I wanted to aim for something on the same scale
as a religious icon.
☆ Moving on to
the next picture, what is its name? 生命の讃歌〜その女の子は赤ちゃんを宿した〜 The title is, "The celebration of the
essence of life ~experience~" ☆What is the theme? Virginity ☆ This is a collage,
right? How many pictures are used to make it? ☆ did you take the picture of the baby, too? Yes, I took it. I took all the images that
are on the photograph.
☆About how long
does a work take to make? The first one, about crown prince Amateruhiko,
took about half a The second one ("The celebration of the essence
of a month steadily Photoshopping, and another two weeks to print.
I would embark on a "world picture project!"
☆ If you could collaborate with a musician,
who would Hirasawa Susumu and XTC! ☆Why is Japanese contemporary art seldom
concerned with politics, compared to the west or even china? Up until the Edo period, Japanese art wasn't
seen as academic at all, unlike western art which was academic. Even today,
In japan, art is thought of as something whose purpose is to express a
private feeling. Therefore, for most artists, it's hard to arouse this
kind of private emotional feeling with politics. It's difficult to turn
that (politics) into a theme for an artwork which is expressed in terms
of private feelings.
Japanese style,
If you look at the "hard" aspects of my art
mori who only think In practice, it is difficult to imagine anyone
making such giant artworks by themselves. So directon becomes essential.
To me, the ability to direct people skillfully is as important as the
ability to do handmade art skillfully. Direction is actually a difficult
skill to master. That's why movie directors and theater directors are
famous, I think.
