Tokyo Damage Report

reup : 4spikes @ Ikebukuro Manhole.

Feb 19, 2004

MAYBE 6 months ago i just randomly met some kid while shopping. he had no eyebrows, a wallet chain the size of your colon, and his bald head was roughly the shape of an upside down pear. i knew he was someone to hang out with. despite my total incomprehension of Japanese, homey decided it would be cool to be friends with me, and steadily emailed me about his band's shows. after like 5 months of not going to his shows i finally became japanese enough to feel the GIRI ('obligation') and forced myself to go. and i wound up having a total ass. i mean, blast.

The first band was SKIP FLOOR. They were pretty grim. All the energy and aggression of the beatles combined with the memorable melodies of Cannibal Corpse.

The next band was amazing ? 4 SPIKES. 4 guys that all looked like English ‘postcard punks' circa 1981… and they brought their own entourage of fans that looked EXACTLY THE SAME. I couldn't tell who was in the band and who was not in the band until the second they started playing. The music was good because it was ALL call-and-response. Also, the parts stayed in a groove. Some bands can pull that off. but most bands if they switch between similar sounding riffs it just seems pointless: “dude, why did you even bother writing another riff that sounds just like riff #1? Why did you bother changing riffs when the new riff adds no dynamics to the song??”. But 4 SPIKES is one of those bands where the similar-sounding riffs manage to work together to create a groove. So, good for them. Also they had the punkest butts per capita of any band I have seen so far.

After them was my pal Yoshihiro's band, BOYCOTT DEMOCRACY. Whose slogan is, ‘GRUNGE AIN'T DEAD.' Which is, not only silly, but amazing. Considering that ‘grunge' ended when these guys were all in 3d grade?and that their music sounds like KORN. The first couple of songs had good dynamics and crescendos and catchy emotional type melodies on top of the aggression. But after that it just turned into bad rap metal. I like that I felt that I had to say ‘bad' rap metal. (As opposed to??)

But BOYCOTT DEMOCRACY gets points for everyone jumping around and mugging and doing that Hunch-back-of-Notre-Dame style headbanging that Korn does. It's like “dude, my riffs are so heavy I can't even lift my guitar off the ground, is how heavy they are.” But somehow it works. Also their singer is amazing ? this tiny 5 foot tall kid who talks totally macho and has a fake suntan, like a scout-boy or something. Plus he has this amazing variety of Angry Faces he makes.

then, um, ROUTE 6 played. or possibly HAWRING HEAD. they were fun, i guess, but really lacking in the poser department so i just bailed and went to socialize. um, yes this is yet another story without any real ending.
