Japan trip 3: shirogane onsen

TUESDAY SEP 6 — SHIROGANE ONSEN

Again, another 5 hour fucking journey to go like 160 kilometers. Furthermore, they arrange it so you can’t travel at night because all the buses stop at 5. so you have to cancel a whole day’s sightseeing, and , travel all day, followed by a whole night with nothing to do!!! What the hell???

WED SEPTEMBER 7 — SHIROGANE ONSEN

Ok, get up and there is a taiphoon coming tonight. Hike like 3.5 hours in the rain. The whole time I am hiking, I am hearing these explosions from the soldiers practicing their moartar fire in the valley next door. Huh!

then go explore the town. It is one thing to read about the “Doukan Kokka” ( the totally not-at-all-necessary construction projects that prop up the economy and destroy the environement, waste everyone’s tax money, line the pockets of mafia dons and crooked politicians) but it is another thing entirely to see it in action ?

in less than one kilometer, this river had no less than SIX bridges!!!

here is a view north from the middle bridge– you can see bridges. . . 1,2, and 3

and a view south — bridges nos. 2,3,4, and 5 , plus that shiny snake-like thing that runs up the mountain? fully enclosed fiberglass sidewalk for no reason.

and, after those four bridges, here is #6!

This in addition to the whole river having been paved on both sides and the bottom too, plus a series of canal-quay-like retaining walls every half kilometer or so.

Oh, plus the bottom of the river is landscaped into a series of small gardens, WHICH ARE UNDER WATER HALF THE YEAR. Jesus.

more on the middle of the river —

Oh, plus on the hiking trail (which was basically a 2 meter wide power-line-access road barely wide enough for a 4WD, there was A FORTY-FOOT-WIDE BRIDGE to cross a river that was like 4 feet long. Fucking insane. Plus, they got a 400 foot long plexiglass above-ground tunnel for pedestrians to hike up this one mountain. After such a crazy science-fiction-like Habitrail experience like that I figured that the final view at the top would be nothing short of Armageddonish, but in fact this hugely expensive thing just leads to . . . . a parking lot. Huh??

ok so it is utterly un-neccesary and politically corrupt, but SO COOL!!!

Anyway, from there to the onsen hotel next door. It is a TRIP. Total luxury style spacious and guilded, and even every shower station has little faux-marble partitions and movie-star-makeup mirrors on it! On the other hand, you can totally hear the roar and buzz of videogames from the arcade next door. Wacky. There is a sauna too, and a “freezing cold water pit” to go along with it. If you have not done it, I totally recommend saunas, but remember to bring a little wet towel so you can mosten your eyelids, otherwise they turn to dandruff and fall off your face. Also, when you get in the cold water bath, it is totally like the opening bars of ANGEL OF DEATH. But instead of slayer they had little loudspeakers in there playing the 101 strings version of Danny Boy which I found mysterious and maybe not the best music to fry your eyelids off by.

Anyway next was the outdoor bath. It was fucking amazing!!! You get this awesome clifftop view down to the river rapids below, plus hella crazy rock formations inside the bath to look at.

view from the damn outdoor bath–

plus, more science apparattuses!!

On the way back, I saw the saddest thing ever — a middleaged hotel employee, alone, In a little car, filled to the roof with Pooh Bear dolls, praying to Jesus. I just wanted to cry.
