So what's your point? Aside from producing more waste by wrapping things individually but that happens everywhere. Not only Japan has smaller portions of food for sale, we have that over here too. That stuff is mostly ready made food people take out for their lunches; really what's the point to buying a whole box of eggs if you just need one for today's lunch? Obviously it's nicer to be able to walk into a store and buy a couple little things you're gonna have for lunch.
And besides, you could turn it all around too and walk through an american supermarket and see all of those super sized packages, packs of 25 donuts and packs of 12 cans of coke and think "omg america's fucking crazy!" because you either need a big family or an unhealthy appetite to finish all of those.

No wonder that they sort there waste by flamable and not flamable o.O
If you would sort it like we do in german (plastic-waste has an one bin) you'll need an extra garbage container for every family :D

I don't know what happened to my comment, but I'll just write again...
Maybe it's too late, but I just want to let people here know, that the pictures, this guy here shows, do show things, which can be bought mainly in the 24h supermarkets in Japan. These things are meant for people, who live alone or who are just stopping by on their way to their workplace or travel. So please, it's great that you seem to live in Japan and seem to love the country and its people, but I'd like you to point this fact out.
There are enough "normal" size articles in Japan, e.g. eggs in packs of 10 pieces etc. Japan is just caring for different kinds of people, to these belong families as well as singles as well as travellers and more. For the needs of every person there's the right packaging. Nothing of the bought things will be wasted or thrown away uneaten. This is kind of eco, isn't it?

Hey, first you should mention, that you bought your things mainly in one of the 24h supermarkets!
And then you should also show, that in regular supermarkets there are also eggs to buy in packs with 10 of them (and 6, and 4,...!!)... You know, that they pack in Japan for the people living in families and also for the onese living ALONE or those who travel? If you live alone, one egg is enough! If you travel, one packed bread is enough, either!

At first, I was unimpressed, because I've seen this manner of tiny portions and ridiculous waste of plastic in my home country, Norway, as well. But the one egg was pushing it. And he one ham was where I had to laugh. The rest, bar the lime, I can picture finding in Norway.

I don't find that ridiculous at all (except the waste of resources, but the portions aren't ridiculous). It's that kind of mindset that makes Americans so effing FAT. And also why Japanese people probably live longer, because their obesity rates are almost non-existent.
