Your host's reaction to the traffic was typical and justified, but their ignorance of the cause is disturbing. A competent host would automatically get you up again after the surge fades, or at least contact you personally to let you know what is going on. You should probably re-evaluate your choice of hosting, or consider being hosted by service providers. Wordpress.com can host you for free, and you can keep your domain for $10/yr. They can also easily handle spikes like this since they are a massive site.
