Tokyo Damage Report

mp3 post: panda fucker maniac revolution

So why I haven't been posting lately?  I've been breaking in my new home-recording studio. That's right: the world needs more demos of imaginary bands!

actually, not totally imaginary!

PANDA FUCKER MANIAC REVOLUTION  (in Japanese, パンダ・ファッカ・マニアック・レボルーション, or パファマレ (pa-fa-ma-re) for short), was a band I started way back in 2004.

The idea was "dooooom metal + enka," but it wound up being more of a prog-rock thing, mostly due to the complex chord changes in enka.

Enka – for those of you too high-and-mighty to click the link-  is really un-hip – music for drunk grandpas and grandmas to sing in run-down karaoke bars. But it can also be really bombastic, and allows the normally stuffy Japanese to engage in nonstop emotional hyperbole:

"Even if i die a thousand times, i won't forget youuuuuuuuuu! I exist only to drink sake and tell lieeeesssss!!"

Try getting a Japanese person to talk like that without singing.

Anyway, it's an obsession shared by me and the guitarist of Megadeth (Marty Friedman, who hosted a tv show called Rock Fujiyama, and would supposedly bust out enka solos done Yngwie style).

FUN FACTS ABOUT PANDA FUCKER:

The other members were all Japanese, and enjoyed forcing me to write the lyrics in my terrible Japanese, for their amusement.

They were my drinking buddies, and the whole band (from the band-name to the song topics) reflects our shochu-influenced aesthetic. Probably it should have stayed a drunken joke, instead of trying to turn it into a real band. Because, like all my bands, we broke up after one show. (photos/report about the show . . ..here) .

Although I sing on these recordings, the original singer was a punker lady – she only went to Nightmare and Gauze shows-  but she refused to sing in a punk / hc style. She vowed, "I'll sing Enka or ムード曲 (mood music), and nothing else!" . . . Personally it would of been easier for me to write some 30-second punk tunes, instead of spending vast amounts of time writing recondite prog/doom/enka. . . .but (sigh).

Anyway, we never recorded a demo – but after around 4 years of nagging, I finally got the bassist to make me a copy of the sound-board recording from the one live show. Using that error-filled, low-fi DAT tape, (why a DAT? Who knows?!?), I was able to re-construct the songs last month, the way a paleontologist might try to reconstruct a dinosaur from a femur and a few scraps of teeth.

And so, for your listening pleasure, here's the panda fucker maniac revolution demo:

This is about how our singer – a small but complex lady – keeps getting approached by creeps outside of train stations.

Here we introduce the various band members, pointing out their embarrassing nicknames and idiosincracies. Apparently my nickname was "Short-pants Scholarship Student."

People from all around the world want to ask Japan: why do Japanese guys like panties so much?

download all four as a .zip file

the first person to suggest 'myspace' or similar is gonna catch a beat-down.

However, anyone who can suggest wp-compatible players / facilitating downloads of my music, I'm all ears.

If you send it in to Maximum Rock n Roll, a really good underground punk mag, they might play it on their radio show.
